If you care about modern hip-hop there's a high chance you went through an Odd Future phase. Tyler released this album when everyone had their eyes on Odd Future. I personally have fond memories of going to my comm tech class in eleventh grade and posting up by the computer watching Loiter Squad videos on YouTube, and when the "Domo23" video came out all my classmates gathered around and we watched it as a class.
I remember I was very excited for the release of this album and I would spend time watching interviews with Tyler where he would claim the album was trash. His idea was to leave a low standard for the album so listeners would go in without any high expectations, that way even if the album didn't end up getting good ratings people wouldn't be disappointed and the album wouldn't be overhyped.
Tyler has been known to be the type who doesn't care for the opinions of others and that is very prominent in this project, this album is very much Tyler's own sound and doesn't live within the boundaries of modern rap. With a strong jazz influence, this album is very different from other modern rap albums, give it a shot if you're unafraid of an Odd experience.
I'll be listening to an album of my choice and writing my two cents on it every weekday @ 11PM

NOW THE MOON'S RISING // $UICIDEBOY$
I remember I first heard this album in November of last year and from the first song to the last I was lit. Honestly $uicideboy$ have gained a mass following to the point where they're almost mainstream but all of their work is still so good.
I remember I found out about these guys a week before I went on vacation and while I was going through the airport I had this mixtape on repeat with the volume on max. Something about this album is so impeccable to me, I get a smile on my face when I hear the beginning of "Paris" when it opens up with the four kicks in succession. These guys are going to be big in the next coming months, I know they've been blowing up all over the underground community but soon enough they'll become mainstream.
These guys remind me a lot of Bones and XXXTENTACION because it's dark underground rap and all of these artists are undeniably the come up and will only get bigger. Honestly, I know the name $uicideboy$ might sound sus or unappealing but I promise you looking into them will not be disappointing.

Useless // Bones
Bones has always been an artist that I've been interested in but up until recently I would never to listen to his projects in full, I would just search him up on SoundCloud and play his most popular songs. I remember a couple months back when this tape first came out and I would listen to it on repeat and crank my headphones all the way up every time "RightOnSchedule" would come on.
The reason I decided to post about this project today is because the song "Okay,ButThisIsTheLastTime" has been in my head recently so I decided to listen to this mixtape and blog about it. I really enjoy Bones as an artist because to me he's an individual. Being an underground artist he doesn't have a care for what music is trending or mainstream because he knows his cult following will like HIS music.
I know Bones is somewhat of an obscure artist but I really do recommend him, his grimy and dark aesthetic really makes him standout and gives him a very unique sound.

AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP // A$AP Rocky
I'm not gonna lie, when this album first came out I wasn't feeling it, none of the songs stood out to me and the whole vibe of the album wasn't special. Listening to this album again left me with a totally different opinion on the project. I really enjoyed this album but it was weird for me because I have memories of listening to the album through and thinking it was trash.
The reason I decided to do this album today is because I was working on the weekend and out of nowhere "Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2" started playing in the back of my head and as soon as I got home I decided to give it a listen. As I looked for the song I noticed Bones was featured on "Canal St." and I was amazed because I love Bones. I must've not known who Bones was back when this album released and I was really amazed that his name was on this album.
As I continued to look through the tracks on this album I remembered songs like "L$D" and "M'$" so I marked this album as one to listen to for my blog. I think it's amazing how my opinion on this project was so different from what it is now. After listening through this album I can honestly say that I enjoyed this album and you should give it a shot.
RIP YAMS

GO:OD AM // Mac Miller
I feel like if you're a white dude and you say Mac Miller is a good artist people expect for you to follow up that list with Eminem, Macklemore, Hoodie Allen and any other white rapper out there. Nonetheless here I am to tell you that I think Mac Miller is a good artist.
Before this album I remember I really got into his Watching Movies With The Sound Off album but besides that I haven't heard much from Mac. When this album released I wasn't hyped up for it or awaiting its drop, this album went under my radar for the first few weeks but I eventually came around to listening to it.
This album is really cool because there are some songs that get me amped and hype me up but there are other tracks that are more on the mellow side. Its a good mix of both types of songs and I feel like most artist either try to make an album of mellow songs or an album of hype songs but I don't usually see a mix.
This album holds a soft spot in my heart because its on of the albums that I fall asleep to on the bus. I think it's funny cause I have an unorthodox mix of albums that are just easy for me to fall asleep to, not saying this album is one to sleep on. This is a well rounded album and this album is a good starting point if you haven't heard any of Mac's stuff.
Hope you have a safe weekend, thanks for reading :-)

Concept Vague // Night Lovell
I knew the day would come where I would be writing about this project, and I am so glad that day is today. I remember I first heard this album last year when I was in class and I got a screenshot of this album from my friend telling me that I had to listen to it. The song he specifically told me to listen to was "Forget About Me", I remember the first time I listened to the song my jaw literally dropped and I was in love. I instantly downloaded the whole album to my phone and spent the next week listening to only this album.
After listening to the album I looked through his SoundCloud to see if there was anymore of his work I could listen to, but as I looked through it I realized that this album was the first thing he posted on his account. I thought it was amazing how he could have such confidence in his work that the first thing he throws online is his finished project.
This album is very different from any other project I've written about. The foundation in this project is the production behind every song. You need to listen to this album and just leave Nights voice as another layer in the production. No disrespect to Night but I feel thats the best way to experience this album.
There are mornings where I get to school and I listen to this album for a morning jolt of energy. This album is amazing and if you haven't heard any of Night Lovell's work I think you should give it a shot.

Trap Lord // A$AP Ferg
Ferg isn't the headliner in A$AP mob but he sure does a good job of making his name one to look out for. This project is filled front to back with banger after banger, honestly almost every track is hype. This is the type of album you put on if you're just tryna let loose, not the type of album where you sit down and ponder the wordplay Ferg uses.
Whenever this album comes on a smile from cheek to cheek comes on my face and I can't help but get excited when I hear it. The opening track "Let It Go" is a perfect introduction for the direction this album goes into, full of heavy bass and high hats. I will say that the reason I enjoy this album so much is strongly because of the production behind it, I find the production on this album impeccable.
This album is best listened to with the volume maxed out and bass cranked as high as you can put it. I would recommend this album to anyone who is trying to have a good time. This album is very rude, aggressive, in your face rap that's the best part of it.

Doris // Earl Sweatshirt
Okay I honestly forgot how many projects were released in 2013, looking back it seems like every artist came out with something. One of the many projects that had a release in 2013 was Doris by Earl Sweatshirt.
I don't remember when I first heard this album, I feel like it's always been in my rotation. Earl is an easy artist to adapt to because his music isn't too in your face or aggressive, the majority of it is laid back and sometimes gloomy. Listening to this album feels very fluid, not in the sense that there is a story being built from song to song but more in the idea that each song has its own identity but they all just sound good together.
I'm not going to lie, I fell asleep to this album on the bus today, but not because I think this album is boring but more so because I find this album soothing. Like I said, none of the tracks on this album are too in your face, Earl didn't let go of his identity to make a club hit because that's not the type of music he makes. Earl stayed truthful to himself with this album and in that the majority of these songs are quieter and mellow.
I don't know what kind of a person I would recommend this album to, I guess this project would appeal to a person with a taste for weird rap music with a dark, gloomy twist. Nonetheless I like what Earl did with this project and if you're willing to give it a listen I recommend it.

There's Alot going On // Vic Mensa
Seeing how we're done with the whole classics week, from here on out I'll be going though projects that I like and not just new releases. So to start off this week I decided to go with a newer album that I've had on repeat the past couple days; There's Alot Going On by Vic Mensa.
I've heard stuff by Vic before and I know he's had a Mixtape already but the first thing that put him on the map for me was his single "U Mad" featuring Kanye West. I really enjoyed that song and expected this album to be like that. This album caught me by surprise because it wasn't really like his other stuff I've heard. On this album, he put in more effort in the wordplay and flow, I could tell he put more work into the meaning behind the lyrics rather than how catchy his songs are.
A reoccurring topic on this album is equality and police brutality. You can tell that songs like 16 Shots were made to be used in protests much like Kendrick Lamar's "Alright". Vic also brings up the fact that he's recently been signed to Jay Z's Roc Nation label, I swear he implements it into every song.
Overall this project has some pretty good elements and is a good place to start if you're looking into listening to Vic Mensa.

Slime Season // Young Thug
To finish off this week I decided to go with a mixtape I am very fond of; Slime Season by Young Thug. I think this is my favourite tape ever, something about this project is so musically attractive to me. I know young thug is a controversial rapper, because a lot of people fall on one side of the coin, they either love him or hate him. I'm the type of person who loves young thug.
Personally I think this is the best tape out of the Slime Season trilogy, the other tapes do not live up to the bar set by this tape. I'm so glad I chose to listen to this again, honestly every track on here bangs. By far my favourite song on the tape is Freaky, the production by Wonda Gurl is wild and Young Thugs voice on top of it just murders it.
If you are interested in listening to Young Thug but don't know how to get into him, this is the album to start off with. I'd recommend this tape to anyone who cares about rap music.
(This daily thing is gonna be a Monday to Friday type deal so I'm gonna sign off for the weekend. If you actually read these and keep up and care I love you <3 see you on Monday!)

Days Before Rodeo // Travi$ Scott
Before anything, I want to explain that yes, I do know this is a mixtape not an album. I just didn't think the title an album or mixtape a day would sound as fluid.
I'm gonna be straight up I don't even remember what time this brings me back to, this mixtape came out August 2014 so I would've been going into twelfth grade and at that time I had already developed a taste for rap. I found out about Travi$ Scott all in one go. I looked though my SoundCloud account to find the playlists I liked at the same time as this mixtape and the mixtape I liked just before this one was Owl Pharaoh. I remember the first song I heard off this project was Don't Play, the one that features The 1975 and Big Sean. I was confused cause I didn't recall hearing about Travi$ before but I knew his voice. It took me a while to realize that he was featured on Cruel Summer and he was a XXL freshman year of 2013.
Listening to this mixtape wasn't as easy as streaming it through Apple Music, because Apple Music doesn't do mixtapes, nonetheless downloading this tape off of HotNewHipHop wasn't all that hard and was well worth it. Honestly, this tape goes down in my records as one of the best. I would definitely recommend this mixtape, just know that this project doesn't share a lot of similarities with Scott's debut album Rodeo, but in my opinion this tape is way better.

Good Kid M.A.A.D City // Kendrick Lamar
Going on with the theme of the work, I decided to listen to GKMC because this is by far my favourite Kendrick album. When I was listening to the Spotify playlists that I mentioned in yesterdays post Kendrick was also an artist whose name kept popping back up. I decided to look into his music after hearing him go in on Rigamortis, I listened to both Section.80 and GKMC and I thought GKMC was the better of the two.
Kendrick represented a whole other side of rap to me because at the time the only rap I thought was good was a song that had good production and a good flow. Kendrick changed that up because most of his songs had both but with his flow he wasn't just talking about money and women, he used his skill to portray a story.
Listening through the album once more I spent time to clear my mind and actually think about what I was listening to and even compared to what I listen to today, a lot of the songs on GKMC hold up. Too much of the rap scene of today is solely based on good production, while a lot of the tracks on this album do the opposite and go fairly light on the production and it works!
These songs aren't dependant on a catchy hook or heavy production, the core of each of these songs are the story Kendrick is trying to share. I recommend this album if you're looking to listen to music with meaning and good storytelling.

Yeezus // Kanye West
Seeing how this is supposed to be classics week I found it perfectly fit for me to add in Yeezus to the mix. I remember at the time this album was released I was going into exams in tenth grade, I was also trying to identify with a genre of music. That year a big thing for me and the dudes I hung out with were Soundcloud producers but more specifically, trap music.
With all the people around me being heavily interested in a specific sub-genre of music I took it upon myself to discover what the rap world has to offer. While listening through some Spotify playlists, I noticed a commonality between the tracks that were being played. A lot of songs that came through the shuffled playlists were from Watch the Throne and Cruel Winter. Something about these songs sparked an interest in me, so I did some research and found out that Kanye West had a big part of each of those projects, and after researching some more I found out that Ye was releasing an album soon, so I decided to go ahead and keep my eye out for the release date.
Something about the futuristic sound and feel of this album really stuck with me, and left me even more interested than I initially was. I will always consider this album one of the albums that really put me on to the whole hip hop/rap scene.
All of the songs bang, listening through this album again is the best thing because it reminds me of all of these heavy tracks. If there is one song I recommend the most I'd say listen to I'm In It, the song goes buck when Assassin comes in for the second verse good god. Cannot recommend this album enough, one of my all time favourites.

Indicud // Kid Cudi
Hey, I'm gonna open up my blog with a little disclaimer; I have no idea how to write a blog or anything of that sort but, I know how to speak about myself and how I see things, so throughout this entire Album a Day thing I'm just gonna type this up like I'm chatting up one of my friends.
Alright, here we go.
The first week of my blog I decided to go with my own list of classics so my readers can go ahead and try and wrap their heads around what type of a person I am. While deciding what album to start off with I looked through my iTunes library and as my eyes glazed over all the album art looking for one that was just right I came across Indicud. This album initially impacted me so heavily and looking at it again brought back so many memories. This album was released in 2013 while I was in second semester of grade 10.
See tenth grade was a time of transition for me, I moved from Mississauga to Milton the summer prior and began a new year at a school where I knew virtually no one and I had a tough time making new friends. I felt invisible to my peers and I had no friends to talk to, never was there such a time where I've felt so alone.
I remember there was times where songs like Unfuckwittable, Burn Baby Burn and Immortal would give me the courage to breakout of my shell and walk the halls at lunch. So much so it would get to the point where I started talking to classmates during class. Next thing I know I have a total paradigm shift where I realize that no matter what the opinion of others, I'll still be me. Even if I go out and try to make friends but get rejected, who really cares, I've gained the confidence to be okay on my own so even if all goes wrong, I'll still have my own back.
Going through and listening to this album again brought me back to the hardships that I thought myself into years ago, it made me realize how far I've come from being that quiet unconfident kid who would go to the library during lunch because he didn't have friends to spend it with.
I could not recommend this album enough, all of the tracks slap hard. Although cudi is known to be one of the more emotional rappers in the game he speaks volumes on this album and you should give it a listen.
